These are the terms that come up most often in hognose keeping and breeding, explained plainly without assuming you already know the jargon.
The cloaca is a single multi-purpose chamber located at the base of a snake's tail, just past where the body ends. It handles everything that needs to exit the body — waste, urates, and during reproduction, eggs or sperm. In breeding, it's the point where the male and female physically connect during mating. When you hear someone say a snake "vented" or talk about the "vent," they're referring to the external opening of the cloaca.
Hemipenes (singular: hemipenis) are the paired reproductive organs of male snakes. A male has two but typically uses only one per mating — which one depends on which side is closest to the female's cloaca during positioning. They're stored inverted inside the base of the tail and evert (turn outward) during copulation. After a particularly long lock, a male's hemipenes may remain partially visible for a short time — a warm soak usually resolves this comfortably.
Also called the vomeronasal organ, this is the sensory structure in the roof of a snake's mouth that processes chemical information collected by the tongue. When a snake tongue-flicks, it's picking up scent particles from the air and surroundings and delivering them to the Jacobson's organ for analysis. This is how snakes navigate, find prey, detect other snakes, and assess their environment — it's their primary sense, not vision.
The rostral scale is the scale at the very tip of a snake's snout. In western hognose snakes, it's upturned and hardened — the specialized digging tool that gives the species its name. It's used to root through loose soil in search of prey, shelter, and nesting sites.
Snakes don't have eyelids — instead, their eyes are covered by a single transparent scale called a spectacle or eye cap. This scale sheds with the rest of the skin during ecdysis. Retained spectacles (eye caps that don't come off during a shed) are one of the more common shedding complications and can impair vision and lead to infection if left in place.
The white or cream-colored chalky substance that accompanies a snake's fecal matter. Because snakes don't produce liquid urine, nitrogenous waste is excreted in this solid or semi-solid form instead. Healthy urates are white to cream and firm. Yellow, orange, or liquid urates can indicate dehydration or other health concerns.
The technical term for shedding — the process by which a snake periodically replaces its entire outer skin layer. It happens because snakes outgrow their skin rather than having it stretch with them. Young, rapidly growing hognoses may shed every few weeks; adults typically shed three to four times per year.
Problematic or incomplete shedding. Retained skin anywhere on the body — but particularly retained eye caps and skin around the tail tip — falls under this term. Causes include humidity too low, dehydration, lack of rough surfaces to rub against, illness, or nutritional deficiency. Occasional dysecdysis isn't unusual; chronic dysecdysis across multiple shed cycles indicates a husbandry issue that needs addressing.
The pre-shed period when a snake's eyes take on a cloudy, milky, or bluish appearance. This happens because fluid accumulates between the old and new skin layers as they begin to separate. The eyes often clear again a few days before the actual shed occurs — this clearing is sometimes mistaken for the shed resolving on its own, but it just means the shed is imminent. Snakes in blue phase have impaired vision and are often more defensive than usual.
A specific shed that occurs in gravid female snakes approximately four to ten days before they lay their eggs. It's one of the most reliable indicators in snake breeding that egg laying is approaching. After the pre-lay shed, most females stop eating and begin actively searching for a suitable laying site.
The reptile equivalent of pregnant — a female who is carrying developing eggs internally. A gravid female may show visible changes in body shape (a slight rounding or fullness, particularly in the lower portion of the body), behavioral changes such as reduced activity and appetite, and increased basking. The term applies from fertilization through egg laying.
The reptile equivalent of hibernation — a period of winter dormancy triggered by dropping temperatures and shorter daylight hours. Unlike true hibernation in mammals, brumating reptiles don't fully lose consciousness. Their metabolism slows dramatically, they stop feeding, and they become largely inactive, but they retain some awareness and will occasionally drink water. In captive breeding programs, cycling snakes through brumation and the subsequent warming mimics the natural hormonal cues that trigger breeding behavior in spring.
A rhythmic, full-body vibration displayed by a receptive female western hognose snake — one of the clearest signals that she is hormonally ready to mate. It's a deliberate communication directed at the male rather than a stress response or defensive behavior. Without it, males often show limited interest in courtship even in the presence of a female.
The moment when a male snake successfully inserts one of his hemipenes into the female's cloaca, allowing sperm transfer to occur. During a lock, the pair remain physically connected — usually positioned tail-to-tail — for anywhere from one hour to several hours. A prolonged lock is generally considered a positive indicator in breeding. It's the definitive physical confirmation that mating has taken place.
A snake that carries one copy of a recessive gene but doesn't visually express it. A het albino snake, for example, carries one albino gene and one normal gene — it looks completely normal but can pass the albino gene to its offspring. When both parents are het for the same recessive trait, visual offspring can be produced in subsequent generations. The term comes from heterozygous, meaning carrying two different versions of a gene.
A snake that visually expresses a recessive morph — meaning it carries two copies of the gene and the trait is fully expressed in its appearance. Used to distinguish from het animals that carry the gene invisibly. "Visual albino" means the snake is actually albino, not just carrying the gene.
A snake that is heterozygous for two separate recessive genes simultaneously — carrying one copy of each without visually expressing either. Double hets are valuable in breeding programs aimed at producing morphs that require two recessive genes, such as the snow morph (which requires both albino and axanthic). Breeding double het to double het gives a statistical chance of producing animals that express both traits in the same clutch.
The complete set of eggs laid by a female in a single laying event. Western hognose clutch sizes typically range from 5 to 25 eggs. Some females produce a second clutch in the same season, particularly if they're in strong body condition and have had adequate recovery time between layings.
An infertile, unfertilized egg. Slugs are typically smaller, softer, and more yellowish than fertile eggs, with no internal structure visible on candling. They can't develop or hatch regardless of incubation conditions and should be removed from the incubation container promptly to prevent mold spreading to fertile eggs. Finding one or two slugs in a clutch is completely normal — a clutch that's entirely or predominantly slugs is more notable.
The practice of holding a bright light against an egg in a dark room to see inside the shell. Used to assess fertility and monitor embryo development during incubation. A fertile egg will show a network of blood vessels (typically visible from around day 7 to 10 of incubation) and an increasingly visible embryo as development progresses. An infertile slug appears uniform and featureless. Eggs must not be rotated during candling — the embryo's orientation must be maintained throughout incubation.
The moment a hatchling uses its egg tooth to cut through the eggshell from the inside — the first physical break between the snake and the egg. After pipping, hatchlings often rest with just their head out of the shell for many hours while they finish absorbing the yolk sac. This rest period should not be rushed or interrupted, as the yolk provides nutrients critical to the hatchling's first days of life.
A small, temporary, sharp projection on the tip of a hatchling's snout used to cut through the eggshell during pipping. It's not a true tooth — it's a specialized scale structure that exists solely for this purpose and is shed shortly after hatching once its job is done. If an egg tooth doesn't form properly or is lost too early, the hatchling may be unable to pip on its own and may require assisted hatching.
A condition in which a gravid female is unable to pass her eggs on her own. It can result from eggs that are too large, calcium deficiency, dehydration, physical obstruction, or insufficient muscle contractions. A female who has been in active labor for more than 12 to 24 hours without progress, or who passed one egg and then stalled, should be seen by a vet promptly. Left untreated, dystocia can be fatal.
A bacterial or viral infection of the airways and lungs. One of the most common health issues in captive snakes, almost always linked to husbandry conditions — temperatures too low, humidity too high, or a combination that gradually compromises the immune system. Early signs include clicking or wheezing sounds during breathing, open-mouth breathing, and the head held at an unusual angle. RIs do not resolve on their own and require veterinary attention.
The process by which a snake regulates its body temperature by moving between warmer and cooler areas of its environment. Unlike mammals, snakes don't generate their own body heat — they rely entirely on external temperature sources. This is why a proper thermal gradient in the enclosure isn't optional: without the ability to thermoregulate, digestion, immune function, and general metabolism are all impaired.
The range of temperatures available across an enclosure — warm at one end, cool at the other — that allows a snake to thermoregulate by choosing where to position itself. A proper gradient for western hognose snakes runs from around 30–32°C (86–90°F) on the warm side to 22–24°C (72–76°F) on the cool side.
An animal that relies on external heat sources rather than internal metabolism to regulate body temperature. Snakes, lizards, and most other reptiles are ectotherms — sometimes called "cold-blooded," though this is a misnomer since their blood temperature varies with their environment rather than being consistently cold.
A blockage in the digestive tract caused by the ingestion of substrate or other indigestible material. Symptoms include loss of appetite, lethargy, a visibly swollen abdomen, and straining without producing waste. Loose, fine-grained substrates like sand carry higher impaction risk than structured substrates like aspen or coconut fiber. Impaction requires veterinary treatment.
The practice of housing a newly acquired snake in a separate, isolated setup — away from all other animals — for a minimum period (typically 30 to 90 days) to monitor for signs of illness or parasites before introducing it to an existing collection. Even a snake that appears completely healthy can carry conditions that haven't yet produced visible symptoms.
A genetic variant of a species that produces a different color, pattern, or physical appearance from the wild type. Morphs arise from selective breeding for specific genetic traits — recessive, dominant, or codominant — and are purely cosmetic. A morph does not affect the animal's care requirements, temperament, or behavior.
The behavior of playing dead — seen in western hognose snakes as a last-resort defensive display when other bluffing behaviors (hissing, flattening, mock striking) haven't worked. The snake rolls onto its back, goes limp, opens its mouth, and allows its tongue to hang out. It's entirely harmless and purely theatrical. A snake in thanatosis should be given space rather than continued handling.
